Dr. D. MURRAY HICKS is a scientist and consultant with the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research Ltd. (NIWA), Christchurch, New Zealand. Over a period of 20 years, Dr. Hicks' research work has covered a broad range of topics related to river and coastal processes, notably suspended-sediment yields from New Zealand river basins, suspended-sediment and turbulence interactions, hydraulic resistance, river bedload transport, braided rivers, sediment dispersal from river mouths, tidal inlet sedimentation, and nearshore sediment transport. Dr. Hicks is the author or co-author of 38 refereed research papers and 84 other research papers or consulting reports.

Mr. PETER D. MASON is a senior field hydrologist with the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research Ltd. (NIWA), Christchurch, New Zealand. For over 28 years, he has gauged flows, surveyed channels and maintained instrumentation at river sites around New Zealand, Australia, the Pacific Islands and in the Dry Valleys of Antarctica. His background and practical experience in field hydrology made him the ideal choice to co-author and oversee the production of this book. In 1997, Mr. Mason was awarded the John S. Armstrong Award for astonishing research activities.
